Winter semester will begin January 5th, 2015 and Spring semester will begin February 9th, 2015! Before you know it, students will  be involved in their classes and campus activities. I encourage you to stop by or call DSP&S to schedule a counseling appointment for registration advisement. Be sure to complete your COC application, online orientation, and placement test! We look forward to seeing you in the coming semester.
 
 
 

Dr. Stephanie Lee - DSP&S Counselor

As a counselor in the DSP&S department, I work with students to help them formulate goals, plan classes, and help problem solve if any difficulty arises.  Students can schedule appointments to discuss courses to take in the upcoming semester, to develop a Student Educational Plan, or to discuss DSP&S services and accommodations. 
 
I work at the Valencia Campus Monday through Thursday. 
 
 
 
Dr. Christi Franklin - Learning Disability Speacialist
My name is Dr. Christi Franklin and I’m the Learning Disability Specialist here in DSP&S. My primary mission is to determine who is eligible for services under the category of Learning Disabled based on the criteria from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. A battery of tests is completed by the student, and, based on that information, a determination is made to whether they qualify for services in our department.

If you are having difficulties with learning, you may make an appointment with our Director to determine if you are eligible for an assessment. Call the DSP&S office at (661) 362-3341 to set up an appointment. I am available Monday through Thursday at the Valencia campus.

Scott McAfee - Access Coordinator

As  Access Coordinator for College of the Canyons, I want to welcome all new and returning students to our department. DSP&S continues to work to provide universal access to information technology and coursework through accessible software, specialized hardware, and universal design.
 
Through the implementation of universal design, students with disabilities have equal access to important information and equal opportunities to succeed as a student.  Some of the software that the DSP&S department utilizes to achieve universal access includes JAWS, Kurzweil 3000, ZoomText, Dragon Naturally Speaking, on screen keyboards, LiveScribe pens, e-text, and other accessible tools.
 
In continuing with our tradition of providing cutting edge technological solutions for students with disabilities, the College of The Canyons DSP&S department has recently purchased several Livescribe Smartpens for student checkout. These pens record lectures as well as your written notes. By clicking into your notes, you may access the recorded lecture at the exact point in time the notes were written. Not sure why you circled a section of your notes? Simply click on the notes with your smartpen and the pen will start playing back the lecture at the exact time you wrote the notes. The pen also digitally records your written text which you may print up or share with study buddies. These pens may be checked out from the DSP&S department (free of charge) on a first come/first serve basis. Smartpens may be checked out by semester by those with lecture recording accomodations. Please speak to your counselor to verify that you qualify.

Priority registration for students currently enrolled in the DSP&S program at College of the Canyons for Winter 2015 is November 10th  or 12th, 2014 and for Spring 2015 is January 5th or 6th, 2015.   Documentation for new students for Winter 2015 must be received in the DSP&S office by Tuesday, November 4th, 2014 at 5pm in order to process paperwork and receive priority registration for Winter 2015. Documentation for new students for Spring 2015 must be received in the DSP&S office by Monday, December 8th, 2014 at 5pm in order to process paperwork and receive priority registration for Spring 2015. 

 
All NEW students need to complete a COC application, assessment testing, on-line orientation, and DSPS paperwork to receive priority registration for Winter or Spring 2015. IMPORTANT UPDATE: DSP&S was informed that returning students are eligible for priority registration.  Please check your my canyons account and see if you have a priority registration date on one of the days listed above.  If you do not, please call the office at 661-362-3341 and we will assign you a priority registration date. There is no walk-in counseling for priority registration on priority registration days.
