The Center for Civic Engagement was established at College of the Canyons (COC) in 2015 with the goal to create a “civic-minded” campus by emphasizing the concepts of civic ethos, literacy, inquiry, and action, all of which are detailed in A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy’s Future (2012). This publication is guiding the nationwide civic engagement movement on college and university campuses, along the work of national organizations like the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), American Association for Higher Education (AAHE), American Association of University Professors (AAUP), Imagining America, and Campus Compact. Community-Based Learning; or, what is referred to as CBL, is one pedagogy leading the civic engagement movement throughout higher education.
Community-Based Learning fosters a civic-mindset among students and is viewed as an integral component of student success. Simply stated, CBL involves participation in “learning through action,” “leaning through doing” or “learning which is processed, analyzed, and reflected upon.” It also involves “active learning” which ranges in scope from encouraging application and integration to understanding self and others to developing new or deepening values. Students examine issues in real-world settings; and, through hands-on participation, they apply their knowledge, skill, and critical thinking to address these situations. Community-Based Learning encourages students to examine complex ideas and to critically evaluate “real world” situations while “linking” discipline theories and concepts, along with course lectures and readings.
